democrat harry reid expressing his condolences. but also during that statement, there was an implication there that under sequestration, when budgets are cut, that we may see more of these that it may put the marines and others and soldiers at risk because of the budget cuts. now i can tell you, marine corps officials this afternoon are taking a strong exception to what harry reid implied. saying that this this exercise, for example, was planned well in advance, had nothing to do with the budget cuts. there were no corners cut. and if they couldn't afford to have all the safety precautions into place, they wouldn't do the exercise. and in fact, one marine corps told us just, one marine corps official told us a short time ago, he considers this nothing but pure political posturing on the backs of these dead marines. >> those are some very strong words from the marine corps about senator harry reid, jim miklaszewski thank you soef for being on the program. >>> tonight president obama boards air force one to go to the middle east. prospects for movement on the israeli/palestinian peace proc

debate. senate majority leader harry reid announcing the assault weapons ban authored by california senator dianne feinstein will not be included in the democratic gun control legislation that currently is working its way through the chamber. instead reid says feinstein's proposal will have, quote, an opportunity for a vote, possibly as a separate amendment. now this effort was sparked by the newtown school shooting in december and since then, we have seen a surge in applications for gun permits across this country. according to the fbi we saw a record 19 1/2 million background checks for firearms last year. nearly three million of them coming in december alone. that is the most for any month on record. and more than 7 million from december through february. that is a 54% increase from the previous year. this national trend is echoed in the microcosm of newtown, connecticut. where law enforcement say they have seen the pace of applications for gun permits double. so what does this all mean for the gun control debate, an effort going forward? joining me fox news political analyst jua

lack of majority in the senate which is led by the philosopher harry reid. but they maintained by a large strengthen the house of representatives, losing only about eight seats. and a position of state legislatures were very strong. that position that they built up in 2010, they lost legislatures in maine and minnesota, but by and large can't legislatures that they one in 2010, and had the kind of advantage that they haven't had in state legislatures since the 1920s. so we are 25 states that have governors in both houses of legislature, controlled by republicans. they are not just small states. and 53% of the nation's population versus -- i believe it is 13 states with democratic governors or legislatures, 21% of the nation's population. so let me just leave you with a final number out of the exit poll. the electorate that reelected obama when asked whether government should do more to solve problems or whether government is doing to me things better left to businesses and individuals, 52% government is doing too many things. 43% government should do more. ..
